Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about Fluid Film, undercoating, and how the service works.
Yes. Florida's humidity, rain, coastal air, and year-round moisture exposure can all contribute to rust over time. Most people think rust is only a northern problem, but we regularly see corrosion on Florida vehicles, especially trucks, SUVs, work vehicles, and anything exposed to salt air. Undercoating is one of the most affordable ways to help protect a vehicle you plan to keep long-term.
Absolutely. The best time to protect a vehicle is before rust starts. A new truck has clean metal, which allows the coating to protect vulnerable areas before corrosion has a chance to develop. It's much easier to prevent rust than it is to slow it down once it has already started.
Yes. We wire brush and remove any loose or flaking rust before applying Fluid Film. Fluid Film is designed to penetrate existing surface rust and help prevent moisture from reaching the metal. It will not repair structural rust damage, but it is very effective at slowing surface rust from spreading further.
No. Unlike rubberized undercoatings that harden and seal the surface, Fluid Film remains soft and active. It is designed to displace moisture and protect the metal rather than seal moisture underneath a hard coating. This is one of the main reasons lanolin-based coatings are widely used for rust prevention.
Fluid Film and rubberized undercoatings protect vehicles in very different ways. Rubberized coatings dry into a hard layer that sits on top of the metal. Over time, that layer can crack or separate from the surface, allowing moisture to become trapped underneath. Fluid Film remains soft and active, allowing it to creep into seams, welds, and hard-to-reach areas while continuously protecting the metal from moisture. For vehicles with existing rust, lanolin-based coatings are generally preferred because they do not seal corrosion beneath a hard coating.
Yes. We use specialized wands to spray inside frame rails and other enclosed sections that are difficult to reach with a standard spray gun. Internal frame protection is one of the most important parts of the application because moisture often collects inside areas you cannot see. Protecting the inside of the frame helps reduce rust in some of the most vulnerable areas of the vehicle.
Most vehicles maintain protection for 1–2 years under normal Florida driving conditions. Vehicles exposed to coastal environments, boat ramps, work use, or frequent highway driving often benefit from annual reapplication. During service, we're happy to discuss the best maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and driving habits.
Most Florida vehicles benefit from reapplication every 1–2 years depending on use and exposure. Vehicles that tow boats, spend time near the coast, or see heavy use may benefit from annual applications. Vehicles that are driven less frequently or stored indoors can often go longer between treatments.
Yes. Florida Undercoating is a fully mobile service. We bring all equipment and materials needed to complete the application at your home or workplace, so there is no need to drop off your vehicle or spend time waiting at a shop.
Most applications take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the size and condition of the vehicle. Larger trucks, SUVs, vans, RVs, and heavily rusted vehicles may require additional time. We'll provide an estimated service time when scheduling your appointment.
